Simply Simone – Performing songs of Nina Simone @ Historic Hampton House
May 31 @ 7:30 pm – 11:00 pm

“Jazz in the House” is a night of live music at the Historic Hampton House. Come out, live in the moment, and walk where legends once walked! This month we are featuring Simply Simone!

‘Simply Simone’ is a revue celebrating the fascinating life and music of the legendary Empress of Soul, Dr. Nina Simone. Four of South Florida’s talented vocalist perform the songs from the Nina Simone songbook. Carbonell Award-winning actress, Sarah Gracel plays the young Nina. Jazz vocal phenom, Ja’Nia Harden plays Nina as she ventures into the night club performance moments of career, stunning musical theatre actress, Toddra Brunson plays the militant Nina and show-stopping vocal performer, Deana Rahming portrays the older Nina. South Florida Times writer, Michelle Hollenger wrote of the South Florida production: “SIMPLY SIMONE CELEBRATES LIFE OF SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS SINGER. Simply Simone-the Music of Nina Simone, an electric new revue based on the turbulent life and rich legacy of this American music icon. Simone’s song, Young, Gifted and Black, written in honor of the singer’s late friend, Lorraine Hansberry, author of the play A Raisin in the Sun, became a civil rights anthem that is as relevant today as it was then.” Join us as we honor the musical legend Nina Simone.

About the film:
Night Catches Us is a 2010 drama film directed and written by Tanya Hamilton and stars Kerry Washington, Anthony Mackie, Jamie Hector, Wendell Pierce, and Novella Nelson. Set in the Germantown section of Philadelphia in 1976 during the Black Power movement in the U.S, Night Catches Us examines the 60s liberation struggles through the relationship of former Black Panthers Patricia (Kerry Washington) and Marcus (Anthony Mackie). With police harassment of African-Americans by the nearly all-white Philadelphia police force still continuing in ’76, Night Catches Us considers the near-impossibility of disentangling the personal from the political. The film intersperses snippets of iconic Black Panther footage. However, rather than romanticize Black Power, Hamilton chooses the riskier path of examining its emotional and political fallout.

LAVIE: Born in Miami, raised by her Haitian immigrant parents along with her brother and two sisters, LaVie discovered her love for music at a young age; recalling “My sister Sandrine and I use to watch Whitney Houston videos on VHS and sing into my mother’s hair brushes”. Now she herself is a proud parent of a teenage daughter and identical twin boys, who also have a great love for music. From her vivacious stage performances to her infectiously rapturous personality, LaVie is a shining example of living life to the fullest! With such a becoming name, “LaVie,” which in French means “The Life,” she uses her eclectic contemporary sound as a vehicle to encourage and empower all people to seek out and experience “The life” that God intends for all to have!
